Through the generosity of a donor, a new well was provided in the province of Kirundo. More than 1,500 people now have abundant access to safe, clean water near their homes.
Bupfunda, a bustling community in Kirundo Province, is a vibrant hub of activity in northern Burundi, with its thriving businesses, hotels, restaurants, and markets. But, before this gift provided access to safe, clean water, behind the lively streets and the hum of motorbike taxis carrying people and goods, the community faced a daily struggle — a lack of access to clean water.
The borehole for this well reaches more than 73.76 meters into the ground. Taps, similar to the faucets we see in our gardens, are situated throughout the area to make water easy to access for all members of the community.
Life Before Clean Water
Women and children carried the weight of this crisis, walking miles to fetch water that carried with it the risk of illness. Clotilde, a community member, recalled, “We used to drink from the spring, and we were sick all the time. Our children suffered, but we had no other option.” Chronic illnesses, fatigue, and hours lost in pursuit of water were part of daily life. Children learned to fetch water as young as six, balancing heavy jerrycans on their heads. The looming chore of fetching water clouded even the joy of playing games like rolling old bicycle tires. Some families would still choose contaminated springs over queuing for cleaner sources far away, as the wait could last 45 minutes, followed by a long walk back home.
A New Dawn with Clean Water
Thanks to this donation, this city’s story has changed. The installation of a clean water source has brought life and hope back to Bupfunda. Women now fetch water in the afternoons while children handle the task in the mornings, freeing time for school and play. Families practice better hygiene, washing clothes and dishes, and even bathing more regularly, which protects their health and dignity. Once burdened by water-fetching, children now play, laugh with friends, and dream of brighter futures. Once weary from carrying heavy loads, adults now take pride in opportunities for better farming. Cabbages grow in small gardens, and local businesses are starting.
Community and Cooperation
The transformation in Bupfunda extends beyond physical health. The community has fostered unity and respect, establishing orderly queuing systems at water points to ensure fairness and efficiency. They have discovered joy in shared responsibilities and ownership of the new water source.
Thankful for This Gift
This gift has done more than bring clean water to Bupfunda — it has brought renewed hope, dignity, and a future filled with possibilities. Clotilde, her children, and the entire community, are blessed by this new well.
