Through a gift from a generous donor provided, a new well was built in the province of Bujumbura Mairie, providing safe, clean water near the homes of more than 7,200 people.
This water has changed lives in the community of Kajiji, a vibrant yet historically challenged neighborhood in Muha Commune, Bujumbura Mairie. Once born out of displacement during the civil war of 1993, Kajiji now stands as a testament to resilience and hope, thanks to the clean water system provided through Amazi’s donors.
Before clean water access, Kajiji’s 7,200 residents lived with harsh realities. Many were forced to fetch water from Lake Tanganyika, a perilous task. Women and children risked drowning or injuries daily in their pursuit of water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. The consequences of fetching water extended beyond personal safety.
The borehole for this well reaches more than 99 meters into the ground. Taps, similar to the faucets we see in our gardens, are situated throughout the area to make water easy to access for all members of the community.
The Struggles of Kajiji
At the Kanyosha health clinic, the scarcity of clean water meant life-saving services were often unavailable. Dr. Marie Goreth Ndorere recounted heartbreaking moments, such as having to turn away women in labor because they lacked the clean water essential for safe deliveries. It was a dire situation where a lack of clean water posed a daily threat to life, health, and dignity.
A New Beginning with Clean Water
Today, thanks to your support, the story in Kajiji is profoundly different. The new water point has become a wellspring of hope, serving as a lifeline for the entire community and the clinic. Celestin Bigirimana, the local leader, beams with pride as he reflects on the transformation: “People no longer spend hours walking to collect unsafe water from the lake. Clean water made new things possible; small businesses flourish and better use of the time.” For Kajiji’s residents, clean water is more than a convenience — it’s an enabler of change. Small-scale agriculture thrives, and shops, sewing services, and food stalls now operate more efficiently.
Health and Dignity Restored
Once hampered by water scarcity, the clinic now operates at full capacity. Dr. Goreth states, “All clinic services are open to the public all the time. Waterborne diseases are almost non-existent, and the population is very clean.” Families are healthier, children are safer, and the entire community benefits from improved hygiene and sanitation. The clean water system in Kajiji is not just an infrastructure project — it’s a source of life and possibility. It has restored dignity, improved health, and revitalized the community’s economy. Your gift has turned daily struggles into opportunities for growth and thriving lives.
